The HfG alumna Tatjana Stürmer was selected from 48 nominated students as a prize winner for the 25th national competition "Bundespreis für Kunststudierende ". Together with her, seven other students are happy about the award.

This is the third time in a row that a student of the HfG Karlsruhe has received this important and unique award, demonstrating not only the individual qualities of the students, but also the success of the educational concept of the HfG Karlsruhe.

The art colleges and academies each nominate two of their students or student teams for the award. From these nominated art students, a three-member jury of experts then selects eight prize winners. In this form, the Federal Prize for Art Students is a unique forum for young artists in Germany. "The Federal Prize is a ticket to the exhibition world," says KAH Director Rein Wolfs.

The competition is jointly organized by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn (KAH) and the German Student Union (DSW). The eight art students will share equally in a total of 30,000 euros in prize money and 18,000 euros in production grants. The latter are intended to enable them to work specifically on works for the exhibition at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn. In addition, the prize winners will receive their own catalog.

The Federal Minister of Education and Research, Anja Karliczek, the DSW President, Prof. Dr. Rolf-Dieter Postlep, and the Director of the Bundeskunsthalle, Dr. Eva Kraus, join in congratulating the winners: "We congratulate all those who have been nominated for the competition and are delighted with the students who have received awards! The submitted works convince through innovation and individuality. They demonstrate the outstanding quality and diversity of education at art colleges."

The Bundeskunsthalle will show the works of the eight award winners from November 11, 2021 to January 30, 2022; the award ceremony and exhibition opening will take place on November 11, 2021.

HfG award winner Tatjana Stürmer was born in Darmstadt in 1993. She studied communication design, media art and art science with Prof. Rebecca Stephany, Prof. James Langdon, Prof. João Tabarra and Dr. Barbara Kuon at the HfG Karlsruhe. She designs publications, objects, installations and videos. Stürmer has worked as an artistic assistant for Metahaven (Daniel van der Velden and Vinca Kruk) in Amsterdam, as well as in the design and editing of the art-scientific magazine Reciprocal Turn.

Her installation "C AT THE END OF A LINE IS A WHISPER ", for which she has now been awarded the Federal Prize for Art Students, refers to the "Book of Kells", the famous copy of the New Testament. Script and space are inextricably linked, bringing and highlighting each other. In the video "Rire et lêcher" (Laugh and Lick), the female protagonist moves slowly and inexorably through empty rolling shelves. Similar to Stürmer's versatile and accomplished practice, her image inscribes itself in our memory.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has offered the competition every two years since 1983; the competition is organized by the German Student Union. The Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn exclusively exhibits the works of the prize winners.

The jury:

Sebastian Baden, curator of contemporary art and sculpture, Kunsthalle Mannheim
