Three institutions - one building: Under the title "The Anniversaries!" the "Hallenbau-Festival 2022" celebrates 25 years of the Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe and ZKM | Karlsruhe in the Hallenbau as well as 30 years of the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung (HfG) in Karlsruhe.

Hallenbau A has been one of the central art locations in Karlsruhe since the 1990s. With a length of 312 meters, 10 inner courtyards as well as 16,500 square meters of floor space, the listed industrial architecture from the 20th century is an urban signet between the western and southwestern city, which is renowned far beyond the city.

From Friday evening to Sunday afternoon, the "Hallenbau Festival 2022" offers culture across all genres: exhibitions, films, concerts, lectures, debates, guided tours, retrospectives and outlooks.

Admission is free in all houses during the festival period.

BookBauFestival

For the Hallenbau Festival, students and teachers organize an extraordinary artists’ book fair in the atriums of the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe. Seven universities, twenty-one players from the international and national artists’ book scene and over thirty students come together and present their artists’ books for sale. From HfG, the initiatives BookBoi*, KLaK, the student publication Munitionsfabrik as well as the magazines Umbau and MAS take part. The BookBauFestival takes place in the context of the economy, sustainable production, and the exhibition and collection of artists' books.

The joint library of ZKM and HfG exhibits a selection of historical books. ZKM, Städtische Galerie and Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe open their storage facilities and make catalogs from three decades available. The program of the BookBauFestival offers workshops for children and adults, readings as well as round table discussions with protagonists of the scene.*

The BookBauFestival was conceived in an interdisciplinary way with students of the seminar “artists’ books with photography” and Prof. Susanne Kriemann.

More information about the BookBauFestival

On the history of hall construction A

Built in 1915 as an ammunition factory, Hallenbau A was in operation until the end of the Second World War with the employment of forced laborers, apart from interruptions between the two world wars. In the 1980s, independent artists discovered the monumental building for themselves, before the Städtische Galerie and the ZKM moved in in 1997, followed two years later by the HfG.

In the diversity of their programs and projects, the three institutions have established the building internationally far beyond Karlsruhe - as a platform for art, media and contemporary art production, as a place for learning and teaching, for debating and researching, as well as for exhibiting and mediating. Three institutions that stand for an art and production space in the middle of Karlsruhe.

On April 15, 1992, the HfG Karlsruhe was officially opened and began its work in the summer semester of the same year with a few students. The first years were still improvised, and this also applied to the spatial accommodation in the Moninger Brewery. It was not until the university moved into the huge Hallenbau from 1995 to 1998, and the ZKM in 1997, that Heinrich Klotz's idea was fulfilled: the reciprocal relationship between art, media and thought was to be taught, researched, experimentally tried out and exhibited in one building.
