A few weeks before his departure from the ZKM at the end of March, the renowned media artist and long-time director of the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe passes away.

After a short, serious illness, the 78-year-old succumbed to it in a Karlsruhe hospital on March 1, 2023. As an artist, he set international standards in conceptual art, performance, video and computer art and played a major role in defining media art as a curator and author.

Weibel taught in Vienna, Canada and New York, among other places. From 1989 to 1994 he directed the Institute for New Media, which he founded at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, and from 1993 to 1999 he was Austrian commissioner of the Venice Biennale and artistic director of the Neue Galerie at the Landesmuseum Joanneum in Graz. Since 1999 he has been director of the ZKM, thereby also exerting an influence on the neighboring HfG Karlsruhe.

The HfG Karlsruhe can look back on numerous unique collaborations with the ZKM as a partner institution. The university has benefited from Peter Weibel's intellectual and artistic influence for decades and regrets the loss.
