Bruno Latour teaches to a new climate regime at the HfG Karlsruhe

Since January 2018, the renowned French philosopher and sociologist has been experimentally developing an imaginary cartography as a visiting professor at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe , by means of which an orientation may succeed in those torn conditions in society, politics and ecology that he has described as the New Climate Regime. In this broader sense, climate is generally understood as people's relationships to their material living conditions.
In several block seminars, Latour, together with students and postgraduates of the HfG Karlsruhe from theory, design and the arts, as well as researchers and artists from different parts of the world, will conceptually prepare an exhibition that can be seen at the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe.
The term "Critical Zone" is taken from the geosciences and describes the biochemical, sometimes fragile layer of the earth, its surface on which life is created. Prof. Latour expands the term to a critical, participatory relationship to our world, whose threatened state has reached an unprecedented scale in the Earth's now man-made history. As "New Climate Regime" Prof. Latour has described our current, worldwide situation, which is not limited to ecological crises, but touches questions of politics and cultural history as well as changes in epistemological perspectives. "Everything must be mapped anew," demands Bruno Latour in his recently published Terrestrial Manifesto.
At the beginning of the year, a winter excursion to the Observatoire Hydro-Géochimique de l'Environnement of the University of Strasbourg in Strengbach Valley, France took place. Currently the renowned scientists and artists Anuradha Mathur & Dilip J Dacunha, Uriel Orlow, Emanuele Coccia and Stéphane Verlet-Bottéro are giving lectures at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe at the invitation of Bruno Latour.

The project is a cooperation with the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe. It is coordinated by Bruno Latour, Daniel Irrgang (HfG Karlsruhe), Martin Guinard-Terrin (freelance curator) and Bettina Korintenberg (curatorial department of the ZKM).
