In his lecture John Jesurn reflects on the social and media context of the cultural scene in New York of the 70s and 80s, which determined his work in theatre, television and the visual arts. Being one of the leading figures of the post-dramatic theatre, John Jesurun established an artistic practice that blends performance, text, media and architecture. The lecture is a survey of his work examining a timeline of various projects like „Chang in a void moon“ which connect visual, medial and verbal spaces.

John Jesurun received his M.F.A. in Sculpture from Yale University and from 1979 to 1982. He was assistant to the producer for "The Dick Cavett Show". Since 1982 he developed text, directed and designed more than 30 pieces, among them "Chang in a void moon“ (61 Episodes), the media triology „Deep sleep / White water / Black Maria“, „Everything that rises must converge“ und „Snow“.
He is the recipient of numerous grants including fellowships from institutions like the MacArthur fellowship, Rockefeller Foundation, Guggenheim Foundation and Foundation for Contemporary Arts. His work is published by Theater Communications Group, No Passport Press and Performing Arts Journal (“Shatterhand Massacree and other Media Texts”). His work also include Fireall (Dance Theatre Workshop, New York), the awarded video for Jeff Buckley´s song “Last Goodbye” and the staging of the opera “Delusion of the Fury” by Harry Partch.
John Jesurun has taught performance studies on different universities in Germany (Gießen), the Netherlands, United States and Japan. His “cinematographic theatre” and multimedia performances had a great influence on the students in Gießen (René Pollesch).
