If, over time, photography has become the primary means of portraiture, might we (the people formed by this condition) begin to consider other entities captured by cameras as subjects with character, personality and even a sense of life? Is this not what already happens with commodities – whose advertising images compel us to buy, to own, to be possessed by our possessions? And are there other categories of life – both natural and fashioned – which liberate our sense of self and expand the very sense of the subject? Lala Meredith-Vula’s Haystacks (1989-ongoing) and the numerous photographs of individual oak trees made by Rodney Graham since the early 1990s provide ample opportunity to address these timely questions.

Monika Szewczyk organizes exhibitions, writes, edits and teaches, most often in partnership with institutions of art and learning.
