Sophia Stoewer's thesis "Four Mothers" explores early childhood strategies for stress management in order to make them integrable for adults in everyday life. The resulting objects are tools that expand one's already existing pool of strategies for coping with stress: a super-heavy blanket simulates skin-like body pressure; a rhythmically purring, torso-shaped arm holds the body and regulates the frequency of the heartbeat; four different pieces of jewelry motivate sucking and thus stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system; a mirror always shows one a bit happier than one actually is and makes one evaluate situations more positively.
While the figure of the mother functions as a symbol for a primary caregiver associated with a sense of security and belonging, "Four Mothers" provokes questions about care work, affection and intimacy in times of physical distancing and digitalization.
