Plastic Fugue_Overview (© Hoin Ji)
Plastic Fugue, an interactive sound installation by Hoin Ji (media art), deals with classism and normative standards and structures in art. Based on the unfulfilled childhood memory of wanting to play the concert flute, the diploma project questions how financial barriers influence self-perception and access to cultural education. At the same time, it criticizes an elitist concept of art that is defined by expensive materials and opens up perspectives on alternative forms of cultural expression.
The diploma project Plastic Fugue consists of four parts:
0. Introducing ipcl - an introductory video imitating a product presentation. CEO Framey of “Moberm”, a fictional company, talks about how Moberm decided to expand its business into musical instruments based on the CEO's childhood memories.
1. Plastic Fugue - an interactive sound installation consisting of six flutes (air 5-10, air Pp 1), each producing only one sound and activated remotely via coded conductor buttons.
Sax Recital - a video played by Arno Arial with the DIY saxophone series, whose mouthpieces are based on open source 3D models and handmade from PCL and PLA.
Pp 1-8, air 1-4, dust 1-2 - Instruments and polymer images made from PCL and PLA instead of traditional materials.
The works combine open source files, DIY methods and 3D printing to deconstruct classical forms. The audience takes control and becomes part of a democratically conceived sound structure - an appeal against exclusion and for accessibility in art. For children who learned early on not to demand anything, and for adults who grew up with this memory.
