Lecture "Telepresence in the age of extreme self"
Choy Ka Fai
06.02.2023, 18:00, Lichtbrücke

A research presentation by the artist Choy Ka Fai on the notions of telepresence in relation to art-making, social media and the metaverse. In his lecture, Choy Ka Fai will share insights from the creation of Postcolonial Spirits, a telepresence performance that centers around the Indonesian folk dance Dolalak. Originating in the 1930s, Dolalak mixes traditional Javanese dance movements with imitations of colonial Dutch soldiers. In Postcolonial Spirits Choy Ka Fai connects performers in Java with the performer Vincent Riebeek in Berlin over livestream. By interweaving cultural and historical rituals across time and space, Choy Ka Fai opens up a liminal space where dance offers new perspectives on colonial resistance, power, and fantasy.

Choy Ka Fai is a Berlin-based Singaporean artist whose multidisciplinary art practice situates itself at the intersection of dance, media art and performance. At the heart of his research is a continuous exploration of the metaphysics of the human body. Through research expeditions, pseudo-scientific experiments and documentary performances, Ka Fai appropriates technologies and narratives to imagine new futures of the human body. Since 2018, Ka Fai explores shamanic dance culture in Asia through his project series CosmicWander, in the format of dance, lectures, a visual exhibition and virtual reality works. Ka Fai’s projects have been presented at major institutions and festivals worldwide, including Sadler’s Wells (London), ImPulsTanz Festival (Vienna) and Singapore Art Museum. He graduated with an MA in Design Interaction from the Royal College of Art, London and was a resident artist at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin and tanzhaus nrw, Düsseldorf.
