New book by HfG professor Michael Bielicky: Perpetuum Mobile
For over forty years, German-Czech artist Michael Bielicky (born 1954 in Prague, lives and works in Karlsruhe) has been creating innovative works in the fields of photography, video and net-based installation. His works are always in dialogue with new technical developments and range from the media-historical deep time to the magical mathematical practices of the medieval cabbalists: idiosyncratic hybrids that belong to both an analog and digital world and operate in the border area between real and virtual space. In doing so, the media artist initiates a critical engagement with the nature of technology, its material and immaterial meanings, and its influence on our perception and actions. The book Perpetuum mobile offers the first overview of Bielicky's diverse oeuvre. The layout was developed by the artist himself and integrates the experimental images into a graphic "stream of consciousness".

Michael Bielicky came to Germany in 1969, where he initially studied medicine. After an extended stay in New York, he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1984 to 1990, first with Bernd Becher and later as a master student with Nam June Paik. In 1991 he became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 2006 professor of new media at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe. Bielicky has participated in the São Paulo Biennale (1987), the Videonale, Bonn (1988, 1990, 1992), Ars Electronica, Linz (1992, 1994, 1995), and the Havana Biennale (2012), among others.
