HfG Karlsruhe is extending the deadline exceptionally for studies in theory of media and arts, Deadline: June 19, 2017.

The university is a sister institution to ZKM | Center for Art and Media, with whom it not only shares the building, but also develops common projects in the areas of studying, researching, producing and exhibiting. The university’s open and experimental studies in the field of theory and philosophy unites critical theory work with a practical part in a minor subject, which can be chosen from the departments of Media Arts, Exhibition Design, Scenography, Communication Design or Product Design. The university is not tied to the modular structure of Bachelor and Masters studies. The course of study in Media Theory & Art Research, with all its freedom, is nevertheless concluded with an internationally recognized Magister (academically equivalent to a Master’s degree).

A number of new professors research and teach within a wide range of fields in the theory department. Issues surrounding critical theory and visual culture play an important role here as well, such as practices in artistic research or experiments in machine learning. The Italian media theorist Matteo Pasquinelli works in the field of neural networks and machine intelligence. Johan F. Hartle from Amsterdam focuses media theory and art history on political aesthetics. Prof. Dr. Matthias Bruhn from Humboldt University Berlin teaches art history with an accent on technical images. Sandra Pravica from ZfL in Berlin creates the epistemological ground from the philosophy of science and technology. New positions in the arts and design are held by Omer Fast (Berlin), Darsha Hewitt (Canada/Berlin), Johnson/Kingston (Bern/Luzern), Susanne Kriemann (Berlin), James Langdon (Birmingham) and João Tabarra (Lisbon).
