From temple of knowledge to homeless shelter and from cruising spot to silence center, libraries have many faces and functions in our society. And their role keeps changing. To address these changes the libraries of Karlsruhe have the ambition to redefine themselves and develop into digital learning platforms. The HfG Karlsruhe has been asked for interventions for the public outside space of five of the biggest libraries in Karlsruhe. The interventions should make their transition visible and usable, serving as functional signifiers of the exchange of knowledge and information and as tools for human interaction in the public sphere.

Observations on the surroundings, the materials and the use of these five specific situations become the starting points for interventions. With the help of photographic documentation, interviews and maquettes we define the ‘genius loci’ or ‘nature of the place’ of these locations. They will generate ideas for interventions that will be tested as life size mock-ups. We will research innovative exterior materials to create durable and sustainable objects.

After a selection by a jury of experts from the library, the city and the design field at the end of the winter semester, these mock ups will be developed in partnership with professional companies in the summer semester. Seminar related workshops and lectures by experts from the field of art, architecture, public space and public furniture will be organised.

Funded and realised by the Ministery of Science and Arts Baden-Württemberg.
