The NAN Tableware Set is an alternative to the usual tableware in care homes or for private use. The name of the set is derived from the abbreviation Nan = grandmother. In addition, the number of letters corresponds to the three-piece set. NAN consists of two plates and a cup. The focus of the “mindful meals” project is on preserving dignity. Also through high-quality materials and adapted design, I would like to convey the appropriate appreciation to people with dementia. NAN is to be used as an inclusive design and can therefore be used universally.

The design is intended to enable people with dementia to eat as independently as possible and to be able to complete an everyday activity with less doubt and to find pleasure in it. Standard tableware in care homes is often very clinical. White, sterile, clunky and often not very attractively designed. In addition, there are many colorful, seemingly childish-looking products, especially when it comes to cups and mugs.

Plastic or melamine is often used for the materials. Frequent cleaning and use can lead to material abrasion in the long term. The materials are not particularly durable, are reminiscent of children‘s tableware and do not convey a sense of quality. Plastic cups are often rejected by care home residents as they are not considered to be of any real quality.

People who have associated tableware with ceramics their whole lives experience a loss of self-determination in the context of eating. Mealtimes in particular take on great significance, as the table culture associated with them is always linked to memories. The use of everyday objects becomes increasingly difficult as the illness progresses. I want to counteract this with inclusive design.
