Project description:
Obscene, nerdy and from Japan: watching anime on television was considered disreputable in many households in Germany. At the same time, this type of reception corresponds to the exoticizing stereotypes of the (supposedly civilized) Western world towards Japan. In her diploma thesis, Miki Feller uses anime as a medium to talk about anti-Asian racism. The result is three video works, which she showed in her exhibition “Attempts to Overwrite”. Each video tells its own story set in Karlsruhe, including at the train station, the zoo and the castle. They are attempts to describe a predominantly white environment, to position oneself within it and to distance oneself from it.
