“Materials on Exhibition Design and Scenography” (MAS) is an ongoing collection of materials compiled by the Department of Exhibition Design and Scenography at the HfG Karlsruhe, which focuses on narrative spaces and critical design practice.
The new, eleventh issue, dedicated to Klaus Wittkugel, examines his contributions to exhibition design in the early GDR. As an award-winning artist and professor at the Weissensee Academy of Art, he exerted a significant influence on the graphic representation of the state. A selection of his works is visually explored through scans and archival materials. Through interviews with art historian Michael Tymkiw, curator Florentine Nadolni, and eyewitness accounts, the connections between art and propaganda as well as historical developments are critically examined. With contributions by Prem Krishnamurthy and Henrike Naumann.
To mark the tenth anniversary of this ongoing collection, the presentation offers insights into the various themes of the individual issues. For the first time, the independent series of covers is revealed; for the most part, these covers—regardless of the magazine’s content—constitute a visual statement on the concept of representational politics.
