Previsualization, commonly referred to as previs, is an essential part of the early planning stages of complex film productions. It allows image compositions as well as camera and lighting setups to be simulated in advance in a cost-effective way. By incorporating animations and virtual camera movements, previs also takes temporal processes into account and expands conventional forms of visualization such as mood boards and storyboards.
Within the framework of the seminar, we explore this form of visualization and develop speculative set designs that are digitally realized using animation software.
Each set consists of a fictional space populated with objects and characters that interact with one another and with their surroundings. The movements of the characters are created through motion capture. A central role is also played by the concept of the MacGuffin: an object that initially appears incidental but influences the characters’ actions and motivations, thereby driving the narrative forward.
Virtual cameras capture the resulting scenes from different perspectives and positions. By bringing together the individual projects, an overarching narrative emerges that connects the various sets and establishes relationships between them.
