Critical infrastructures and artistic-technical practices

Critical infrastructure is commonly understood to mean systems or even organizations whose failure would cause significant disruption to the community. Given the increasing interest in digital infrastructures in particular, it can also be understood as a critical reflection of such systems in terms of their role for the community. The lecture is dedicated to the second reading of the term and examines, with the help of examples, how digital infrastructures can be considered differently from artistic-technical practices.

Birk Weiberg studied art history, media art and philosophy at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe and at the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 2014, he received his PhD from the University of Zurich with a dissertation on the history of optical effects in Hollywood. He was a Visiting Scholar at the California Institute of the Arts in 2012, Junior Fellow at the International College for Cultural Technology Research and Media Philosophy (IKKM) in Weimar in 2015, and Project Manager at the SAPA Foundation, Swiss Archive of the Performing Arts. Since 2008 he has worked in various capacities at the Zurich University of the Arts, most recently as part of the long-term artistic research project "Computer Signals: Art and Biology in the Age of Digital Experimentation". At the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts he was a PostDoc in the research project "Post-Photography: Apparatuses, Images, Practices in Art and Everyday Culture". Currently, Birk Weiberg is project manager for Interdisciplinarity & Transformation and teaches in the Data Design & Art program.
