The short film—an excerpt from the post-apocalyptic love story of Everett and Blu—takes place on the planet Blue Dwarf, a barren, surreal world inhabited by a religious community. Their ancestors fled Earth out of fear of an impending apocalypse and established a new society there.
Although Blue Dwarf can sustain human life, its monotonous landscape cannot replace the lost home of Earth. Hoping to find salvation, Corda, the community’s leader, decides to send a young girl from the workers’ group into space.
The mission promises knowledge and redemption, but it also demands a painful farewell to everything familiar.
Blending fiction with questions of memory, origin, and the human need for belonging, the film envisions a future in which Earth is less a geographical place than a symbol of loss and hope.
For Patricia Čapalija, Goodbye Blu was an opportunity to experience every stage of filmmaking—from the initial idea to the final edit. At the same time, she wanted to create a space where fellow students with little filmmaking experience could take part in the production process. She began writing the screenplay in 2023, followed by filming in spring 2024. Over the course of the project, the film evolved far beyond her original vision, a transformation that became especially apparent during editing. After several cuts, she discarded and restructured more than half of the recorded material. In doing so, she learned how important it is to let go of scenes one has grown attached to. This process of reducing and refining ultimately shaped her learning experience just as much as the production itself.
Since 2021, Patricia Čapalija has been studying at HfG Karlsruhe, where she recently completed her Diploma in Exhibition Design. Throughout her studies, she focused on designing spaces for people, exploring questions of what connects us and brings us together, as well as what divides and hurts us—always seeking constructive ways of engaging with these themes.
With the completion of her diploma, Patricia Čapalija is entering a new chapter. She will begin a dual degree program in Architecture with a specialization in timber construction in Weil am Rhein and Freiburg. There, she aims to deepen her knowledge and continue contributing to the creation of a built environment that is both thoughtful and meaningful.
