City Lights
Lights of the Big City
USA 1931

Director: Charlie Chaplin
35mm | German
dubbed version

A penniless vagabond in the big city falls in love with a blind flower girl and does everything he can to help her. Slapstick, quiet observations of everyday life, and tender moments alternate without a single word being spoken. The images tell the story, the music provides commentary. A language that everyone understands.
Chaplin worked on this film for many years, long after sound films had conquered the market. He deliberately stuck to the silent film format and expanded it with sound effects and music that he composed himself. The production was elaborate; Chaplin repeatedly refined the timing, comedy, and depth to find the perfect balance.
The combination of choreographed physical comedy and emotional depth, the alternation between laughter and seriousness, makes it clear how much Chaplin's work is based on nonverbal communication, rhythmic movement, and the art of pantomime. Qualities that continue to inspire today! Although not a debut, our first film shown in the Blue Salon marks our tenth anniversary!
