Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design was first established as a progressive school on April 15, 1992. It was founded by Heinrich Klotz between the years 1989 and 1992, together with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. The combination of teaching, research, and exhibition institutions addresses the given artistic and pedagogic task of relating traditional arts to media technology and electronic production processes.

        Art colleges in Baden-Württemberg successful together – ABK Stuttgart, HfG Karlsruhe and Kunstakademie Karlsruhe receive funding as part of the “Teaching Architecture” competition

      • The state's three major art academies - the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart (ABK Stuttgart), the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG Karlsruhe) and the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe - have been selected for funding in the nationwide “Teaching Architecture” competition organized by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education with their joint project proposal “Digital Sovereignty for Art Academies”. With a budget of around 4.4 million euros, the joint project is one of 119 funded projects out of 228 applications submitted and will be implemented over a period of up to six years from October 2025.
