I've Heard the Mermaids Singing
Canada 1987
Director: Patricia Rozema
35mm | Original version with German subtitles
Polly is in her early thirties, but far from being an adult. She spends her days strolling through Toronto and taking photographs. While developing her photos in the bathroom, she disappears into black-and-white worlds. Here she can float on water or listen to the mermaids singing. Although the
temporary employment agency warns against hiring Polly, curator Gabrielle takes her under her wing . In her gallery, Polly begins to wonder what it means to create something and whether she has fallen in love with her boss.
As in her award-winning debut, Patricia Rozema has once again managed to approach profound and dark themes with humor and a certain naivety. Having grown up in a homophobic environment, it is important to her to bring queer perspectives to cinema. Having reinvented herself time and again over the course of her nearly four-decade career, it remains difficult to pigeonhole her.
Supporting film: Ono No Kochami
