River of Grass
USA 1994
Director: Kelly Reichardt
DCP | Original English version
Cozy has everything she could want: three children, a house, and a devoted husband who works day and night so she can stay at home. Her attempt to break out of this life ends in a bar, where she meets Lee. The evening gets out of hand, and by the next morning they have become Florida's Bonnie and Clyde. Life on the run from the police, which includes Cozy's father, brings them closer together.
River of Grass tells the story of a life that Reichardt herself could have led. In her childhood home in Florida, surrounded by her police officer father's jazz records, there seemed to be little escape from petty bourgeoisie. Her characters cannot shake the feeling that everything around them is going down the drain. Despite the success of her debut in the independent scene, Reichardt was unable to make another feature film for the next ten years. Today, she is considered one of the greats of American cinema, even though she still makes films far away from Hollywood.
Supporting film: Die Welt ist alles was der Fall ist (The World Is All That Happens)
