About cool pieces - a democratic cooling collection

cool pieces deals with the effects of climate change on the human body and its adaptation to heat. With an open source mindset, the project presents an ensemble of three wearable objects whose design takes on multiple facets of a simple fan, one of the most accessible ways to cool the body. The set includes a sun poncho, a deployable headgear and a hand fan for effective cooling. A central idea in the development of the items was to overcome financial barriers to enable widespread participation. For this reason, all instructions are available for free on the website to ensure that production is virtually cost-free. Special attention was paid to the use of commercially available sewing machines, as they are widely available and therefore accessible to a wide range of people.

About the annual exhibition DARE TO DESIGN:

The exhibition DARE TO DESIGN (31.08.-05.01.2025) at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main presents the most outstanding works by graduates of German universities. They provide deep insights into their work and show promising solutions for tackling the major challenges of our time – climate change, political radicalization, gender equality. These are complex and sometimes simple, but all the more intelligent concepts with which the designers are shaping our future. An expert jury selected projects and concepts for “Dare to Design” from over 220 submissions that reflect the range of innovative power of design talent – from circular product design for electronics and wind energy in urban areas to medical solutions using 3D printing and robot-assisted craftsmanship.

About the German Design Graduates:

German Design Graduates (GDG), sponsored by the German Design Council Foundation, is the only national initiative aimed at promoting young graduates from the fields of product and industrial design as well as presenting renowned German universities, art academies, and technical colleges.
