The year is 1963 and Mike Hynson and Robert August are among the world's best surfers of the 1960s. Together with surf-loving filmmaker Bruce Brown, the three leave the crowded beaches of California and follow the summer around the world - always in search of the perfect wave. Their journey takes them from America to the little-explored waters of Africa, via the shark-infested coasts of Australia and New Zealand to tropical paradises.

The film will be shown as part of the film series "The Cinema of Euphoria", in which the Kino im Blauen Salon explores the concept of euphoria and puts it up for discussion in all its diverse representational and evocative possibilities.

USA 1966, 91 minutes, 16mm, English original version, Director: Bruce Brown With Mike Hynson, Robert August, Corky Carroll and others. Supporting program: The Contest, USA 1989, 5 minutes, 35mm, Without dialogue, Director: Gerhard Schwarz

More about the film series "The Cinema of Euphoria"

Euphoria is one of those words that we have inherited from the ancient Greeks. And as with many of these words, the question is: what does it even mean? And since we are a film club, the question is of course: what does it mean to feel euphoria at the movies? Does the selection of films we have put together make us happy, in love with life? Can films still do this in an age in which the image has lost its power due to its inherent oversaturation?

In this summer semester, carried along by spring, we will take you on a journey that examines the concept of euphoria in all its diverse representational and evocative possibilities. From Jackie Chan to Werner Herzog, from Singing in the Rain to Leos Carax!
