The Virgin Suicides
USA 1999
Director: Sofia Coppola
35mm | English
Original version
The five Lisbon sisters grow up between wistful dreams and the dreary reality of conservative suburban life in the 1970s. Isolated from the rest of the world and the dangers that lurk within it, according to their religious and overprotective parents. They must stay away from their male peers in particular. For the boys in the neighborhood, girls in general and the Lisbon sisters in particular are mystical and inscrutable beings, not least because of their inaccessibility. When the first sister takes her own life, it sets off an eerie chain reaction. In her debut film, Sofia Coppola explored the aesthetics of femininity and the inner lives of young women. Adapted from Jeffrey Eugenides' popular first novel, The Virgin Suicides evokes the indescribable melancholy of teenage longing.
