Starting with the winter semester 2023/24, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) will begin implementing its administrative reform. The previous five subject groups will become three. These are summarised as follows:
- Media Art
- Product and communication design
- Media Philosophy and Art Studies / Exhibition Design and Scenography
All degrees will be retained. Degrees can still be awarded in the five degree programmes
- Art Studies & Media Philosophy (theoretical degree programme)
- Product Design (practical degree programme)
- Communication Design (practical degree programme)
- Media Art (practical study programme)
- Exhibition Design & Scenography (practical degree programme)
can be acquired. The study of the previous disciplines remains unchanged.
The merger of the subject groups mainly affects the organisation of the subject groups: The spokespersons of the subject groups are now responsible for longer-term planning and committee work for several degree programmes and in return are supported by long-term positions for staff in the subject groups and in administration. The organisational form of the work in the individual degree programmes remains unchanged. For students, the most noticeable change will probably be the change in the responsibilities of the departmental secretariats.
The practical study programmes at the HfG are permeable fields of study that allow intensive links to the other subjects and are accentuated differently depending on the research and development focus of the university teachers involved. Media-theoretical analysis permeates the practical courses, while media-philosophical and art-scientific training is concretised through direct practical relevance.
