Leningrad Cowboys Go America

● Music, Comedy ● Finland, Sweden ● 1989 ● Directed by Aki Kaurismäki ● 79 min ● 35mm ● Original version with English subtitles ● with Matti Pellonpää, Kari Väänänen, Sakari Kuosmanen

Somewhere in the tundra, in no man's land, there is the worst rock 'n' roll band in the world, perfectly styled, but without an audience and without the slightest chance of commercial success: the Leningrad Cowboys. They decide to bury their national pride and head for the United States, where people will "eat any crap". This movie tells the story of their journey across the ocean and across the continent, a story of disreputable bars and decent people in the backyard of the Hamburg nation.

About the student cinema: The “Kino im Blauen Salon” is the student cinema of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG), which has been run by students since 2017. From film programming, procuring film licenses and ordering film copies, setting up the technology, screen and projection, the scenography of the events, graphic design, organizing the bar that provides food and drink, planning the supporting program with silent film soundtracks, DJs, etc. to the film screening itself, the students work together on a voluntary basis. “We are not a soulless blockbuster movie theater, everything is handmade again, because we play almost all evenings from classic 35mm film reels,” says the Blue Salon team.

“The special thing about our open-air festival is that all films are still projected on 35mm film. Film classics, cult films but also forgotten gems from all over the world are shown on the screen, from national and international archives but also from the HfG collection, which houses some of the treasures of film history. This year, the festival is already entering its 5th round,” say the organizers.

This year, instead of being split over two weekends, visitors can expect 5 days of festival atmosphere with music, short films, drinks and delicious food and, of course, some of the most beautiful things that the seventh art has produced in the last 100 years.
