Produced by the Karlsruhe Franco-German Cultural Center Foundation as part of the European Architecture Days, the traveling exhibition Horizon/t—conceived by HfG alumnus Arthur Schuman—presents a Franco-German, site-specific analysis of the area between the German Wine Gate and the Geisberg. Starting at the Deutsches Weintor, it examines how political and cultural narratives are inscribed in landscapes and continue to shape our perception of spaces. Since the Weintor is primarily associated today with viticulture and tourism, the political and ideological context of its construction tends to fade into the background.
Horizon/t addresses the discrepancy between the visible, the known facts, and what the architecture continues to convey. In doing so, the exhibition calls for a critical examination of the narratives that shape our collective imaginations. At the same time—in light of populist trends on both sides of the Rhine—it highlights current connections to such structures.
Arthur Schuman, a scenographer and interdisciplinary artist from Karlsruhe, combines spatial interventions with theoretical reflection in his work. His installations and video works explore how political and cultural narratives shape spaces and bodies. He studied scenography, exhibition design, and media art at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, as well as stage design at the Berlin University of the Arts.
