“Cooperation” and “collaboration” are widely regarded today as core values and shape artistic and academic practice in particular. At the same time, many educational and institutional structures remain strongly oriented toward individual performance, competition, and clearly defined areas of responsibility.

This contradiction is particularly evident in the digital realm, as digital cooperation is often reduced to the use of digital tools and apps. In inter- and transdisciplinary contexts, however, it also means negotiating shared processes, critically examining tools, sharing knowledge with one another, tolerating uncertainty, and learning new forms of collaboration. As the first joint public event of the collaborative project “Digital Sovereignty for Art Colleges,” the inter- and transdisciplinary working conference “Practices of Cooperation” invites participants to explore these questions. The focus is not solely on results, but on the conditions, practices, and processes of collaborative work, as well as on the question of how digital collaboration at art colleges can be shaped today and in the future.

The working conference is intended as a space for exchanging ideas about practices of digital collaboration. Together, we aim to share experiences across disciplinary, institutional, and technical boundaries, learn from one another, and explore new forms of collaboration.

The workshop is organized by the collaborative project “Digital Sovereignty for Art Colleges” of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, and the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. The project understands digital sovereignty not as individual control over technologies, but as a collective cultural practice of jointly learning, sharing, and shaping digital tools and infrastructures. Through the Digital Sovereignty Studio, the project aims to establish a cross-institutional development, advisory, and knowledge-transfer structure that will strengthen digital sovereignty at art colleges in the long term and support joint processes of learning, development, and transformation.
