This lecture compares medieval art in Germany and Japan through the lens of the use of gold as a material—one that was valued across regions for its characteristic luster and preciousness. The comparison highlights both commonalities and culture-specific characteristics and provides an overview of art-historical perspectives on gold as a symbol of meaning and a form of ornamentation. The lecture will cover German book illuminations and Japanese emaki (picture scrolls), as well as Christian and Buddhist sculpture. Event held as part of a workshop with the State University of Art and Design.
