Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design was first established as a progressive school on April 15, 1992. It was founded by Heinrich Klotz between the years 1989 and 1992, together with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. The combination of teaching, research, and exhibition institutions addresses the given artistic and pedagogic task of relating traditional arts to media technology and electronic production processes.

Rectorate

The college rectorate administers the university. The rectorate consists of the full-time position of rector, who manages the rectorate and the chancellor, who manages staff and economics. In addition, two part-time vice-rectors also belong to the rectorate.

The second deselection of the Rector of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG) is likely to be legally effective following a ruling by the Administrative Court on May 5, 2023.

The provisional Rectorate consists at present of Mr. Thomas Fröhlich as Chancellor and provisional Rector, Prof. Dr. Simone Sheikh as provisional Vice-Rector and Prof. Dr. Sami Khatib as provisional Vice-Rector.
