Cutout: 35mm Workshop
Kino im Blauen Salon, the student cinema of the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG), is starting the winter semester 2025/26 with a new program: The archive is alive!
Under this title, this time the students are devoting themselves exclusively to the treasures of their own film archive. Since 2017, a small collection has been created in the cinema alongside cinema operations, a treasure trove of collective cinematic dreams, grown from donations, swaps, rescues and discoveries from all over the world.
Since the first 35mm print discovered by the student team in 2017 - a Czech western with Italian subtitles - the cinema has pursued a clear idea: Analog films do not belong in the archive, but on the screen. Films live in the moment of projection. That's why the winter semester program brings not only classics from the collection, but also short films from 30 years of HfG film history back to the cinema.
In addition to the archive treasures, a cinematic highlight awaits the audience in December: a short film program is dedicated to the work of the Neue Münchner Gruppe, a movement of New German Cinema that has been forgotten by historiography. The popular recurring highlights are also back: the feature-length Double Feature, the Midnight Movies, a silent film concert with electronic soundtrack and the jazzy Open Stage: Jazz in the Blue Salon.
This commitment has already been recognized nationwide: in 2024, the cinema in the Blue Salon received the 1st German Cinematheque Award in the category “Cinema that looks back ” for its programming.
