The HfG graduate Lukas Klein presents his diploma project „block to blob“ in this year’s museum exhibition of the German Design Graduates initiative. Under the title „Dare to Design – Spaces of Care“ the Museum of Applied Arts Cologne (MAKK) will show from 4 September to 12 October 2025 a selection of outstanding graduation projects by young design talents from all over Germany. The exhibition is dedicated to the design-based engagement with societal, social, and ecological challenges. The selected projects reflect an expanded understanding of design: as collective practice, as research, and as responsibility towards people and the environment.

About the project „block to blob“
Plastic objects surround us daily; their glossy surfaces conceal their natural origins. In his diploma project, Lukas Klein critically examines plastic as an omnipresent yet anonymous material. By means of text and video, „block to blob“ traces the hidden pathways of plastics and makes visible the industrial landscapes required for their production. Karlsruhe, endpoint of the Transalpine Pipeline – one of Germany’s most important oil pipelines – becomes a central site of the petro-industrial complex. The journey ends in a forest in Alsace, where a naturally occurring oil spring reveals the organic raw substance of plastic.

As part of the exhibition, the GDG mentors will also award „Spotlights“ for special achievements in the areas of originality, sustainability, research, and knowledge transfer.

Opening on 3 September 2025 at 7 pm at the Museum of Applied Arts Cologne (MAKK) Exhibition opening with welcome addresses by the museum’s director, the German Design Council and a mentor:in panel talk
