Ideology is back in fashion. Following a long trajectory throughout the nineteenth century—during which it evolved from a doctrine of ideas into a key concept of social critique—hardly any contemporary issue is now discussed without reference to “ideological” tensions and divisions. Today, ideology is invoked to describe the biopolitical imaginaries underlying platform capitalism and Big Tech, as well as the programmatic core of political transformation projects driven by individuals and groups and increasingly framed through new “-isms.” Yet through its inflationary use and polemical conflation with buzzwords such as “culture war” or “cancel culture,” the term has lost much of its analytical precision. The aim of this workshop is therefore to revisit the history and contemporary relevance of the concept and to examine its use within theoretical inquiry.
The workshop serves as an internal forum for discussing teaching and research questions within the field of Art Research & Media Philosophy, but is open to guests. Starting times may vary. No registration is required.
