The Kino im Blauen Salon cinema at the HfG Karlsruhe is kicking off the 2026 summer semester with a special program: Under the motto All beginnings are beautiful!, the new season is dedicated entirely to the theme of directorial debuts.
The occasion is an anniversary: ten years ago, on April 4, 2016, after extensive restoration of the historic projector, a 35mm film copy was shown for the first time: City Lights. This event marked a milestone in the history of cinema and now forms the starting point for a programmatic look at cinematic beginnings. The semester program therefore focuses on directorial debuts – from impressive individual works by so-called “one-hit wonders” to the cornerstones of later international careers.
The film program is accompanied by a diverse range of supporting events: introductions and film discussions, short films from the HfG archive, established series such as Midnight Movies and Kult Sneak, and introductory workshops on 35mm film projection open up additional perspectives on film culture and cinema technology.
Another highlight is the seventh edition of the open-air cinema, which will take place from June 12 to 22, 2026 on the lawn between the HfG and the Federal Prosecutor's Office. In addition to a varied film program, visitors can expect DJ sets, a bar, snacks, popcorn, and (vegan) hot dogs in a summery atmosphere.
As always, admission to all events is free and made possible by the great volunteer commitment of the non-profit cinema association and the support of the HfG Karlsruhe.
