ZENDEGI VA DIGAR HICH is a poignant journey through rural Iran following the devastating earthquake of 1990. A director and his son travel through ruined villages to find actors from his previous film. Along the way, they encounter survivors who, despite their misfortune, continue with their lives. Internationally acclaimed, Kiarostami blends elements of documentary and narrative filmmaking into a moving meditation on resilience and the relentless flow of life. With its minimalist storytelling, slow camera movements, and natural lighting, the film combines poetic cinema with realism through improvised dialogue and amateur performances, capturing the human ability to recover and move forward from disaster.
Kiarostami uses muted colors to reflect the melancholy following the earthquake. Soft pastel hues blend with earthy and gray tones, resembling dust that blankets everything. This creates tranquil, contemplative imagery that emphasizes the emotional depth of recovery and a sense of disorientation. The pastels capture the more subtle aspects of the people, encapsulating their hope in delicate, pale glimmers.

Welcome to our new series CINEMA OF COLORS, in which we are dedicating ten films to the fascinating phenomenon of color in cinema: how does it come about, how does it work, what does it tell...? After all, apart from time, there is probably nothing more essential than light and color, which feed our lives and our projectors. While black and white dominated early cinema for decades, the introduction of Technicolor in the 1930s ushered in a new era for our viewing habits: Color sticks deep in our memory as an emotion. Who could forget the girl's coat in SCHINDLER'S LIST? Why can you immediately recognize a Wes Anderson film by its look, and what color is the MATRIX again?
Our program spans the entire winter semester like a rainbow and shows that the Blauer Salon is not resting on its monochrome reputation. Come along and immerse yourself in a colorful palette of classics and rarities from the international cinema landscape: 10 films of various genres from 10 different production countries and 10 decades will chase the grey season away from your eyes and hearts!

ZENDEGI VA DIGAR HICH ist eine berührende Reise durch das ländliche Iran nach dem verheerenden Beben von 1990. Ein Regisseur und sein Sohn fahren durch zerstörte Dörfer, um Schauspieler seines letzten Films aufzusuchen. Dabei begegnen sie Überlebenden, die trotz des Unglücks ihr Leben fortsetzen. International preisgekrönt, verbindet Kiarostami Dokumentar- und Spielfilmelemente zu einer bewegenden Meditation über Widerstandskraft und den unaufhaltsamen Fluss des Lebens. Minimalistische Erzählweisen, langsame Kamerafahrten und natürliches Licht verbinden Filmpoetik mit Realitätsnähe durch improvisierte Dialoge und Amateurschauspiel und erfassen so die menschliche Fähigkeit, sich von der Katastrophe erholen und weitermachen zu können.
Kiarostami nutzt gedämpfte Farben, um die Melancholie nach dem Erdbeben widerzuspiegeln. Sanfte Pastellnoten verbinden sich mit Erd- und Grautönen, die wie Staub über allem liegen. Dies schafft ruhige, nachdenkliche Bilder und unterstreicht die emotionale Tiefe der Erholung sowie das Gefühl von Verlorenheit. Pastell erfasst hier die subtileren Aspekte der Menschen und fängt in blassen Schimmern ihre Hoffnung ein.

Willkommen zu unserer neuen Reihe KINO DER FARBEN, in der wir uns mit zehn Filmen dem faszinierenden Phänomen der Farbe im Kino widmen: wie kommt sie zustande, wie wirkt sie, was erzählt sie…? Schließlich gibt es neben der Zeit wohl nichts Essenzielleres als Licht und Farbe, die unser Leben und unsere Projektoren füttern. Während Schwarz-Weiß jahrzehntelang das frühe Kino prägte, läutete die Einführung von Technicolor in den 30ern eine neue Ära für unsere Sehgewohnheiten ein: Farbe haftet sich als Emotion tief in unserer Erinnerung fest.
