Ready or not, here we come. UMBAU is launching its upcoming 5th issue under the topic Hide and Seek—come celebrate with us on February 4, 2026, 6 pm at the Reling of HfG. Spend an evening with music, art, and games with us.

Hide and Seek draws on the logic of the children’s game to examine the politics of perception, power, and pursuit. This issue of UMBAU will feature contributions that investigate the shifting dynamics between concealment and exposure—addressing regimes of visibility, erasure tactics, surveillance infrastructures, and evasion strategies. The question of who gets to see, to search, and to remain unseen is always a question of power. As part of this issue, we want to explore how these relationships manifest in the spaces, systems, and forces that surround and govern us.

We also want to take this opportunity to celebrate the release of our second print issue Fragile Futures, an archive publication of UMBAU Issue 2.

UMBAU is an online journal for the promotion of art, research, and design emerging from Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG).
