For the artist and activist Tania Bruguera, aesthetics and ethics are inseparable: her concept of ‘useful art’ (Arte Útil) views art as a tool for political change; she contrasts the conventional concept of site-specific art with the idea of ‘political timing-specific art’. In conversation with Florian Malzacher, who has collaborated with Tania Bruguera on several occasions over the past years, she reflects on the changing landscape of political art and its potential in an era that offers little room for optimism.

Tania Bruguera is an internationally renowned Cuban conceptual and performance artist and activist. She works at the intersection of visual art and political change and coined the concept of ‘Arte Útil’ (Useful Art), through which she views art as a direct tool for social justice, civil rights and the fight against political censorship. She has been a regular guest at documenta and at museums such as the Tate Modern and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
