On July 17, 2026, the website of the research project CRITICAL FACULTIES. BiPoC+ FLINTA* at Art Academies officially launches as part of the Rundgang at HfG Karlsruhe. The project team will present the website on site, followed by an open discussion and Q&A session. From July 16 to 19, the project will also be present throughout the entire Rundgang: with the website as well as further reading materials from the participating artists and researchers.
With Critical Faculties, a multi-year collaborative research project between HfG Karlsruhe and UdK Berlin begins. The project brings together empirical and artistic research to examine exclusions and possibilities for action for BiPoC+ FLINTA* within art academies. The empirical study focusing on racism, inequality, and higher education research is conducted at UdK Berlin.
The artistic research, based in the Department of Media Art at HfG Karlsruhe, is carried out in cooperation with ABK Stuttgart, AdBK Nürnberg, and HBK Braunschweig. It engages with questions around knowledge production and archives, the decolonization of algorithms, the art canon in teaching, visual codes and politics of visibility, drawing as a political gesture, and self-institutionalization as an artistic and political strategy.
* BiPoC+ FLINTA* refers to all persons who identify as women, lesbians, trans*, inter, non-binary or genderqueer and who experience racist and/or antisemitic discrimination in Germany based on their (ascribed) origin, religion, language, or appearance.
The research project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) under the funding code 01FP24094 “BiPoC Women at Art Academies in Focus – Towards a Discrimination-Free Academy” within the programme “Innovative Women in Focus” (IFIF). Responsibility for the content of each contribution lies with the respective authors.
