Materials on Exhibition Design and Scenography is an ongoing collection of materials compiled by the Department of Exhibition Design and Scenography at the HfG Karlsruhe, focusing on narrative spaces and critical design practice.
The new issue on Klaus Wittkugel highlights his contributions to exhibition design in the early GDR. As an award-winning artist and professor at the Weissensee Academy of Art, he exerted a significant influence on the state’s visual representation. Through scans and archival materials, a selection of his works is visually examined. In interviews with art historian Michael Tymkiw, curator Florentine Nadolni, and eyewitness accounts, the connections between art and propaganda as well as historical developments are critically examined.
With contributions by Prem Krishnamurthy and Henrike Naumann.
The new issue (No. 011) will be presented on April 30 at the Museum der Dinge in Berlin as part of the upcoming exhibition “Gestalten für Berlin.”
