On Friday, July 4, 2025 at 6:30 pm, the new publication "Being a Photograph" by artist and HfG professor Susanne Kriemann will be presented at Kunstquartier Bethanien in Berlin. The book presentation will take place in conversation with the designer James Langdon and the curator and author Lisa Rosendahl.
The English-language reader, published by Edition Camera Austria, proposes a shift from the noun “photography” to an active form and focuses on photography as a figure of thought in order to engage with the idea of an animated language. Against this background, the publication brings together authors who form a frame of reference for Susanne Kriemann's work: Siobhan Angus, Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent, Zippora Elders, Daisy Hildyard, Bhanu Kapil, Kyveli Mavrokordopoulou and Lisa Rosendahl.

Exhibition at the GfZK Leipzig: Bones, Pitch, Viper's Head (Being a Photograph) - July 11 to October 05, 2025
On July 10, 2025 at 7 pm the exhibition "Knochen, Pech, Natternkopf (Being a Photograph)" opens at the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig.
What is a photograph and what stories do the elements that make up a photographic image tell? Susanne Kriemann pursues these questions. Her field research takes her to the former uranium mining areas in the Ore Mountains and the Massif Central in southern France or to a steelworks in Siegerland.
The exhibition invites visitors to follow the artist's explorations and to perceive plants, minerals and metals as actors in image production. It begins with photographs of Monte Schlacko in Siegen, a slag heap that was created in the course of steel production. Rare plants have colonized the soil containing heavy metals. They are witnesses to industrial production and at the same time embody it by feeding on its waste products.
