On July 4 and 5, 2025, the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in cooperation with the Berlin art organization SAVVY Contemporary invites you to the workshop “Making Adobe Bricks” in Berlin. The two-day workshop is part of the HfG seminar Assembly of Resources #2 under the direction of Prof. Filipa César (Time Based Media & Performance).

The workshop focuses on the production of so-called adobe bricks - sun-dried clay bricks made from earth, water and organic binders. The word “adobe” refers not only to the building material but also plays on the name of the software company Adobe, known for digital design tools. The bricks made during the workshop will later be used as modular elements in the architecture of the exhibition DESACTA, which opens at SAVVY Contemporary 2025 in November.

The workshop will be led by Marinho de Pina, an interdisciplinary artist from Guinea-Bissau who works in the fields of writing, drawing, architecture, film, photography, music and performance, among others. He will create a space where craft, theory, and art come together.

The seminar Assembly of Resources runs over two semesters. It explores the cultural meaning of raw materials, both in colonial history and today. The first part (Assembly of Resources #1) took place in winter 2024/25. It was organized with the Open Resource Center (ORC), HfG Karlsruhe, and SAVVY Contemporary. It included a research trip to Berlin and readings on extraction and colonialism.
SAVVY Contemporary is a space for art, research, discussion, and community. It brings together Western and non-Western perspectives to explore knowledge, ethics, achievements, and their traces.
The workshop “Making Adobe Bricks” is part of the summer program, which also includes trips, readings, and collaborations.
